Giant Robot, Live set
It is hard to define the genre to which GIANT ROBOT belong. Their music
combines the elements of hip hop, dub, electro and space rock, while
their urban attitude is described as art rock, electro dub or wild
eclecticism, future funk. The band itself believes that their music is a
"meltning pot", a mixture of genres filtered through the Finnish
experience to produce an eccentric sound. Critics say their work is a
turning point in the history of Finnish music. They performed at
different clubs all over Europe from Paris to St. Petersburg.

Funk D'Void (UK, Soma Records)
It's no coincidence that Lars Sandberg has flipped Sir Nose's handle
around for his Funk D'Void alias, because he's most definitely got the
funk. Much in demand as a DJ around the world, he's a critically
acclaimed producer as well, with two albums to date - `1997's `Technoir'
and 2001's `Dos'(both on Soma) - not to mention a string of killer
singles and remixes.
Now Lars has his third long-player, `Volume Freak', ready to go; and it's
a beauty that sees Lars up his game, not to mention the decibel level.
"I'm known to listen and produce music at abnormally loud levels, so I
thought the title was fitting," says the 32-year old.
Lars Sandberg has been an essential player in the Scottish Techno scene
for the past decade. As one of the first DJs (along with Slams' Stuart
McMillan and Orde Meikle), to pick up on the house vibe during the 80's,
the Swedish/Glaswegian helped to play an important part in creating
Glasgow's now celebrated club scene with some of the cities more
legendary nights like UFO and Nude Photo. A 7 year stint as a record shop
manager followed, where he spent his time absorbing everything in the
jazz, funk and soul emporium. Combining this with a classically trained
background, and a love of Djing, it was inevitable that Lars would start
to make his own music.
When he did, he blew the whole joint up with his first solo project as
Funk D'Void (filched from a George Clinton character "Sir Nose Devoid of
Funk") , with the Jacking Chi-Town Classic "Jack Me Off". On the strength
of that release, Funk D'Void immediately began to work on a new level,
gaining the opportunity to travel and work with people whose records he
had been buying and admiring for years.
When he returned to Soma he brought with him his long time friend Nigel
Hayes. Together as Chaser, they produced the unforgettable "Sides of
Iron" EP, which again gained massive support from DJs, the radio and
music press. Two years later they returned with the infectious "Life In
Loisaida" and have gone on to release their stunning debut album "Game
On".
In between all this, Lars continued with his techno excursions as Funk
D'Void. 1996 saw the release of the heavenly "Soul Man", which was soon
succeeded by "Bad Coffee". Intensively mixed by Slam, "Bad Coffee" went
on to achieve places in almost every music magazine's top techno singles
of '97. Later that year as the European dates beckoned, Lars began a live
tour to coincide with the relaese of his dramatic debut Soma album
"Technoir". It received incredible reviews from the entire music press.
As one of Soma's most prominent artistes, Lars is continually in demand
for his blistering sets. He now DJs and plays live all over the world.
He continues to remix for others including Sterac, Orlando Voorn, Envoy
and Kevin Saunderson's E- Dancer. As well as setting up his own record
label "Dark Knight", he has also released a record on Jericho Records
under his new moniker "Frank Dubois". As well as setting up the labels
Dark, Silver & Red Knight he has solo projects under the different
monikers of Frank/Francois Dubois on Jericho and Blue Records, Canada.
His second album will be released in October entitled "Dos" on Soma as
Funk D'Void and has remixes forthcoming for Grow Records and as well as
completeing the second Chaser album. His DJing style covers both mediums
of house and techno seamlessly. Technically dept in the skills of
turntabling at a very early age, he was runner up in the Scottish DMC
finals twice running at the end of the 80s. He is at home playing in
funky small house clubs as he is at playing chaotic tech-beats to 10,000
people at a festival. With over 14 years experience as a DJ he has no
problem reading a crowd and reacting accordingly, the proof being the
diary containing his playing dates... one of the hardest workers in the
business!!
This is the very first time for Funk D'Void ever to play in Finland.
