Manchester, England's finest acid music combo of the early 90s was founded by Martin Price, owner of
the city's influential Eastern Bloc record shop, and Graham Massey, who had previously worked in a
café opposite the shop. Together with Gerald Simpson, they began recording as a loose electro/house
collective, releasing “Newbuild” in 1988. Simpson subsequently left to form his own ”A Guy Called Gerald”
vehicle, and was replaced by Darren Partington and Andrew Barker. These two young DJs were
working together as the “Spin Masters” and were regular visitors to Eastern Bloc, proffering a variety of
tapes in the hope of securing a deal with Price's Creed label.
“Quadrastate”, which included some input from Simpson, helped to establish the new line-up as premier
exponents of UK dance music, with the attendant "Pacific State" single becoming a massive underground
hit which crossed over to the UK Top 10 at the end of 1989. “Ninety”, the band's debut for ZTT, became an
instant rave classic and established them as a commercial force. Further UK hits followed with "Cubik/Olympic"
(number 10, November 1990) and "In Yer Face" (number 9, February 1991). Ex:El featured guest vocals from New
Order's Bernard Sumner on "Spanish Heart", and Sugarcubes vocalist Björk on
"Oops" and "Qmart". In October 1991, Price declined to tour the USA with the band, electing to work on solo
projects instead.
808 State persevered with another fine album, 1993's Gorgeous, which saw a new rash of collaborations.
Featured this time were Ian McCulloch (Echo And The Bunnymen) adding vocals to "Moses",
and samples from the Jam's "Start', UB40's "One In Ten” and even Star Wars
"Darth Vader”. Massey occupied himself with co-writing Björk's "Army Of Me" single and other material on
her 1995 collection, “Post”, before 808 State regrouped for the following year's Don Solaris album. Adopting
a more experimental approach than the early 90s work, the album featured guest vocalists from Manic Street
Preacher's James Dean Bradfield and Ragga. In late 90’s the 808:88:98 compilation was released including
several new mixes. Since the release of this album, Massey, Partington and Barker have continued to work
on new material while undertaking various remix projects.
In late 2002 a long waited new 808 State album “Outpost Transmission” came out on Shadow Records.
Nothing much has changed - 808 State are still producing machine music that’s as mind-blowing
as it is catchy. Much like their southern contemporaries Orbital, this is brain massaging music that can
make you feel jazzy, dance - whirring effects, solid beats and layer upon layer of warm synths.
What about 808 djs sets then? By Andrew Barkers own words:
"We mix it up. It is a mixture of tuff house, breaks and techno. Between me and Darren, you’ll get a
cross section of every type of dance music you hear or have heard, the best of it. Basically, we play a
party set so, if you’re there in the crowd, don’t bother staring at us ’cause we’re not going to entertain you.
We just want to see you dance!"
And last a list of artists 808 State and Graham Massey have remixed, worked together or produced.
