B-eat-z season 2006 opening - Greetings from Holland!
:: Dj Dab (Melkweg/Lowlands. NL)
:: Dj Ken-Guru

Yes sirree Bob. DJ Dab is back. This is his third time in Oulu so we can all expect another night of musical fireworks. The flying Dutchman will cause havoc on the dancefloor with his mad bombs of smoking reggae riddims, faster than bullet-gun breakbeats, drum'n'bass from the deepest jungle and to top it all off, he promises to drop a few oddities to make it all make sense. It's all about having fun...

Meet also our resident dj DJ Ken-Guru who kick starts the show and joins DJ Dab later on in a joint session of back to back carnival dj action.

Dj Dab (Melkweg/Lowlands. NL)

DJ Dab started playing the Utrèg scene in 1983, way back in the days before God became a deejay. Love for music has always been the driving force and still the only reason for doing the work many others see as a way to get famous or get laid.

Being born and bred with music in a musical family, playing flute and tuba in a brass band from age 7 led to playing guitar in several bands during the eighties and nineties and also producing drum'n'bass tunes and making remixes for several top acts and a shitload of unreleased dubs (together with Kagga & Blieb).

An open minded view of music and an insatiable hunger for new tunes has kept the fire burning for 20 odd years now. Needless to say his playlists consists off almost all the major and minor clubs and festivals in Holland (and abroad) over those years.

Check the playlist for current whereabouts, since DJ Dab is a versatile deejay it is always smart (unless you're as open-minded as he is) to find out what he will be playing. Although the several aliases he plays under may give you a clue.

Skank Around Sound was formed around 1997 together with long time friend and partner in crime John (aka DJ Whocares/L-ende/Wizard) and all-round music promoter. First as a name for a commercial skanky tune for Roadrunner Music and later as a platform to play all those tunes nobody else dared to combine. This led to a short series of compilation CD's being released by the name of Skank You. The Skank Around Sound as it was broke up in the soundclash era a clubnight held in the Milkyway (Melkweg) A'dam for a stretch of almost three years together with Controverse Allstars and Ivoryman. John more and more concentrated on his long time love of folk, as DJ Wizard, and Ivoryman (a soundman from the late eighties) started to be the deejay partner instead of MC.

The wild style of the early Skank Around Sound slowly changed to authentic soundsystem roots and dancehall style. Most of the time being mashed up with hip-hop and R&B. Currently doing damage at the Mo'Fyah club nights @ Tivoli (Utrèg), Milkyway (A'dam) and hopefully soon in Rotterdam.

Around 1999 the Skank Around Samba Sound, a skank around spin off currently known as "Samba Soun'" started as well back with friend John and still running on the Que Pasa nights in the Milkyway and Fuerza! In Ekko playing all sorts of latin flavoured music; mostly the Mestizo flavour made famous by Manu Chao a big mix-up of latino reggae and caribbean stylez. For a short stretch Da Mad Hatter (still the name of his company) became his alias for playing drum'n'bass around "95. Still in love with a lot of excellent d'n'b it (unfortunately) only gets played as part of his big mix sets.

Because of his never ending hunt for new and old tunes, he developed several specialities. Jamaican music from 1960 to the present day is numero uno and it's fair to say that black music over the years has been a great inspiration together with good pop (be it soul, funk or latino flavoured). A good song has always meant more than just a good beat! The sixties was the decade where lot of contemporary music found it's birth still holds a particular interest to him and you can be sure to hear a sprinkling of this in all of his sets.

It's not very easy to categorize Dj Dab's musical variety but his greatest love has always been the sixties jamaican rhythms but he doesn't shy away from the sounds of now and times to come. Versatility goes a long way when talking about DJ Dab and his taste in music. For b-eat-z he promised to dig up some of the weirdest stuff from his vaults of musical gems.
